The issue about democracy or lack thereof (“electoral college”) largely stems from the unification of the ‘States’ which is the root cause of this attitude — because to a lot of people, the opinion of a state should matter more than that of the majority people. These ‘States’ were likely better off independent and seceded. I’m neutral on that opinion — there are pros and cons of electoral college but I’m more so referring to the attitude — “we are independent, we are proud, we are exceptional, and we don’t need anyone.”
